Acts 17 v.29
“Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill.”
The spiritual stumbling block the Athenians faced was that they completely misunderstood who God is. They grew up, lived in and were saturated by the pagan culture that thought of the gods living in temples and looking like humans but this isn’t the real God.
This immense spiritual problem, that they didn’t know the one true God, meant they couldn’t relate to him properly because they didn’t know him. This is an age old problem for many because God is not like us, we can’t make a likeness of him to worship because no image can ever adequately describe what the true God is like.
Do you fall into the same trap as the Athenians did? Perhaps you think of God as being like some divine creator who is remote or aloof from his creations? Perhaps you think of him as being like us, only a bit nicer, a bit more decent and more powerful than us. Yet the Lord is none of these things.
God’s appearance is beyond description, he is spirit so we can only understand who God is by what he has done. That is why Paul describes God as being the Lord who made heaven and earth, that he gives life and controls all of history. It is this God, the one who controls all things who is so great and powerful that they need to know. Do you know him and respond to him in repentance and faith as he calls us to do?
