Luke 19 vs. 1 – 10
“Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
During the lead up to Easter Sunday, we are going to be thinking of some of the things that happened before Jesus death and resurrection. When Jesus was about to enter Jerusalem on Palm Sunday he passed through Jericho for the last time. A huge crowd came to meet him and because the crowd was so big, Zacchaeus who was a small man had to climb up a sycamore tree to see Jesus. Even though the crowd was big and Zacchaeus was small, the Lord still knew where Zacchaeus was and when he called out to Zacchaeus, Zacchaeus immediately came down to him. That reveals the Lord’s supernatural power, how he knows all things and how he has the power to call people to obey him.
We should take comfort from the Lord’s power because we can see how mighty he is. When we think of his power, think back to how he called you to know him, perhaps you felt you couldn’t do anything but trust the Lord. That is good news for us because it means that no-one can resist the Lord’s call when he calls them, they will respond to his gracious call in their lives. Remember that when you are paying for people to come to know Jesus as their Lord and saviour.
